About Toto
The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name around the globe.
After a break of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. It also features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa on their recent tour. The following year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the final time that all original Toto members Toto were on stage together. The band broke up following this. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit show for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in 31 year that all of Toto's original members performed together. The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
